Description
Cows at a Trough, 1889
Signed and dated lower-left: "James Mc Hart. 1889"
Oil on canvas laid down on masonite
30 _ by 50 5/8 inches
Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500
Condition: Unframed. The painting has been glued to a masonite panel. There is a heavily discolored, old varnish. There are some scrapes in the surface of the upper left quadrant, about an inch and a half long, which are visible in the catalogue photograph. At the lower edge, there are some losses that have not been filled. On the left, there is a large reverse L-shaped tear that extends from three and a half inches from the left edge, beginning five inches from the bottom, and goes up eighteen inches. The foot of the tear is fifteen inches long, and curves up one inch into the right thigh of the cow. It does not impact in any major area of the painting.
