Description

Pre-Columbian, Nicoya Culture, Costa Rica, 1000 CE. Metate (or Royal Throne) sculpted out of a single piece of volcanic rock. Royal Seat of Power in the shape of a jaguar having openwork abstracted head with protruding / elongated eyes and wave-like nose; open-work legs are finely sculpted and flared. Metates like these were used to seat a departed Lord on his way to the afterlife. 34"L x 15"H x 15"W.
