NASA Custom-Made Dark Blue One-Piece Flight Suit as made for C. Stanley, the Chief Aerial Chase TV person on the OFT (Orbiter Fight Test) flights (Challenger flights 1-5, STS 1-5). Mr. Stanley flew flights 1, 3-5 wearing this special flight suit that was designed by NASA to distinguish the Shuttle Chase Team crew members from other flight and civilian personnel. The flight suit was made of Nomex by Flight Suits LTD of El Cajon, CA, the same company that made the flight suits for the Thunderbirds aerial acrobatic team. There were only three chase plane teams created by NASA including the primary team and two secondary teams (one based at El Paso, TX and the other at the Johnson Spacecraft Center in Houston) making this one of the rarest official NASA flight suits ever issued. The chase teams were created to fly next to the orbiter on launch and landing to determine if there were any problems visible (i.e.. landing gear failure). They were also there to call out air speed and distance to the ground on landing in the event of equipment failure. There is a NASA-JSC label inside the suit along with Mr. Stanley's nametag. The suit has a zipper front and zipper pockets as well as a Velcro-adjusted waist. No patches were worn on this suit as they tended to reflect against the aircraft canopy. Like-new condition and an important addition to any collection.
