Michael Collins' 18kt. Gold Lunar Module
Michael Collins' 18kt. Gold Lunar Module Model (7x7x7") Three individual 18kt. Gold LM models were made in 1969 by the jeweler Cartier of Paris on behalf of Le Figaro newspaper and presented to the three Apollo 11 astronauts during their post-flight tour in Paris. This example was presented to Michael Collins. It is still in its original red leather pyramid case (with the locking snaps attached, but separated). It is marked in gold at top: "F Les Lecteurs du Journal Le Figaro A / Michael Collins" and signed "Michael Collins" in gold underneath the case. The model weighs 435gr which equates to $4,000 in gold value alone (as of early September when this was written). A handwritten note from Michael Collins reads: "This gold replica of the Lunar Module was given to me in Paris shortly after the flight of Apollo XI in July 1969. I believe that only three of them exist. I have signed the leather case on the bottom in gold ink.". A fax from Cartier, Paris is included attesting to the uniqueness of this item. This is a striking work of art that really should be seen to be appreciated. Ex. the Michael Collins collection.
