With two outs in the 9th inning of Game 4 of the 2005 World Series, Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks and his White Sox teammates sought to put an end to a curse that began shortly after the White Sox's Championship season of 1917. Perhaps the curse which brought an 88 year championship drought to the great city of Chicago was magnified by the events surrounding the 1919 baseball season. Clearly the best team in baseball during the 1919 season, "Shoeless" Joe Jackson's heavily favored White Sox conspired to throw the 1919 World Series. Now with 88 seasons of built up pressure, the only thing standing in the way of a White Sox championship was Houston Astros pinch hitter, Orlando Palmeiro. With the count 1 and 2, the Sox closer succeeded in getting Palmeiro to stroke a grounder to Sox shortstop, Juan Uribe who threw to first baseman Paul Konerko for the final out - and the rest is history. White Sox Owner, Jerry Reinsdorf was presented with the final out ball and this special auction features the very bat that Orlando Palmeiro used to ground out to Uribe that started the celebration and let the champagne flow. Orlando Palmeiro has signed his authentic, Louisville Slugger and added the inscription "My bat used in the last out of the 2005 World Series, White Sox vs. Astros, October 26, 2005". To our knowledge, no "last out bat" has ever before been offered at auction. This history making artifact thus becomes a history making auction as well.
This WS game used bat comes with letter of provenance from the player Orlando Palmeiro. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
