AFTER R.A. MONVOISIN, OIL ON CANVAS, 45" X 58", ACHILLES PRESENTING THE PRIZE OF WISDOM TO NESTOR:A scene from Homer's "Iliad", depicting Achilles presenting the prize of wisdom to Nestor at the funeral games while Agamemnon looks on. Marked Paris 1820. Information inscribed on verso. In a gilt wood frame.
Great looking Neoclassical, monumental painting having excellent color and detail. As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame: at least 5% overpainting but could be 10%-18% - difficult to tell because of some green appearing under UV light where the UV light is not penetrating the varnish and also some smearing observed under UV light; the primary area where overpainting is seen is in the lower half of the painting - one can see noticeable repairs of tears (probably) in the lower center in the seated Nestor and the legs of Achilles - there are 3 patches on the back in that area; much unstable overall cracking and craquelure; later gilt frame with very slight wear.
