A Large Greek Terracotta Pithos
Greece, Magna Graecia, Ca. 350 BCE. Large Greek wine container with pinched bottom (to allow for impurities to settle), bulbous body, cylindrical neck with flared rim, and twin handles. Pithos is slipped in white paint, albeit very aged, darker than white now. Some chips to rim reveal natural red terracotta. 17"H.
Provenance: Formerly in the collection of TJ Die, Houston, TX
Minor rim chipping, root marks and mineral deposits, as shown.
