England, 1753, Darby Steelyard for Gold Coins A steelyard with a flat horizontal beam of brass, (probably the first coin balance to be patented in England no. 686 in 1753). It was invented by W. Bradfort and J. Hulls and made by R. Darby. It has a knife-edged foot below the beam and a clip to hold the coin. The beam length is 8 inches in a long black leather covered cap-end case and has the initials R. D. Extremely rare and in excellent condition. See Gerard Houben, The Weighing of Money.
