France, c.1795. Jecker folding balance for gold . A folding steelyard type counterfeit detector, but not automatically self-raising. The steelyard is in a flat slender mahogany case. A rectangular counterpoise could be moved over a beam, with graduations in gros and grains. A glued-in label (very good condition) indicates the mass of many different gold coins up to 4 1/2 gros. The first maker was F.A. Jecker of Paris (signed on the beam) in very good condition and rare. See, "The Weighing of Money", by Gerard Houben 1982.
