Rare Early Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird and Floral Decorations, possibly Peter Cross, Hartford, CT, circa 1800, approximately four-gallon ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled spout, decorated with a highly unusual incised design of a vertically-oriented bird with heavily-striped body, perched on a flower. Interestingly, this design was almost certainly executed while holding the jug sideways, hence the unusual posture of the bird. The daisy-like blossom with thin, pointed petals is similar to distinctive floral motifs employed by Hartford, CT potter, Peter Cross. This jug may be a Cross example, or made by a contemporary in the Hartford area. A rare decoration. Significant raised cracking throughout, including a deep 2 1/2" flake at shoulder on reverse, along with a few other smaller flakes. Exfoliation to shoulder on front. Horizontal crack in handle. Heavy chipping to base.
