Mary Queen of Scots: 19th century, Oil on Canvas. A historical depiction of Mary Queen of Scots being read her condemnation to death by a court official and his associate. Signed and dated 1860, Roma, lower right. Mary Queen of Scots (Mary Stewart), 1542-1587, only child of James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. Mary had the strongest claim to the throne of England, through her grandmother Margaret Tudor. Her legendary beauty and charm and courage have made her a particularly romantic historical figure. Excellent condition. Frame is classical revival giltwood composition, incise carved with acanthus spandrels. Measures approx. 39-3/8" x 49". PAINTING HAS BEEN RELINED.
