Catalogue note
The composition is based on a painting by Johann Wenzel Peter (b. 1745 Karlsbad, d. Rome 1829) who corresponded with Giacomo Raffaelli (1753- 1836), a Roman mosaicist, about the subject. Peter supplied animal paintings to the Vatican, including a set of 20 ordered by Pope Gregory XVI for the Consistory in the Papal States Apartments. The same subject signed by Tomaso Calandrelli is mounted on a silver box by Edward Smith, Birmingham, 1830 (Steppes Hill Farm Antiques). Two similar boar hunt compositions, but with three hounds, are illustrated in Jeanette Hanisee Gabriel, Micomosaics, pls. 107 and 108, pp. 146-147, one of which is attributed to Gioacchino Barberi (1772-1857).
