Description
Mysia. Cyzicus. EL Stater (16.05g), 5th century BC. BMFA 1495; Fritze 175. Very rare. Old cabinet tone. Obverse slightly off-struck. A lovely and fascinating coin of great interest. Good very fine. Numismatik Lanz 2009 (147) lot 93; Stack's 2009 (12 January) lot 2015; Golden Horn collection; Spink 1993 (96) lot 99; Naville & Cie 1922 (4) lot 747; Grand Duke George Mikhailovich of Russia (1863-1919) collection.

"She is not mortal, but an immortal bane, dread, and dire, and fierce and not to be fought with" (Homer, Odyssey, 12.119). Syclla was a gruesome female sea-monster... Homer describes her as a creature with twelve dangling feet, six long necks and grisly heads lined with a triple row of sharp teeth; her voice was likened to the yelping of dogs. Her appearance in Odyssey, when she eats her way through most of the crew, is probably one of the most horrific and pathetic scenes in the whole poem!
