Description
Exceptional set of 4 steam gauges mounted to a carved backboard from the yacht “Fanita”,c. 1889. The gauges have silver dials, are signed “American Steam Gauge Co. Boston” and are engraved “Steam Yacht Fanita”, 3 gauges have an 8 3/4” bezel diameter and 1 has a 5 1/8” bezel diameter. Gauges retain serial numbers and are engraved “Steam”, “Vacuum”, and “Vacuum Pressure” and have lever for diverters mounted to the bottom. the carved backboard is made from a single 1” thick mahogany board and retains much of it’s original gold leaf decoration. 22 12” High x 42 3/4” wide. Original, untouched nickel surfaces which have typical oxidation and minor wear, old varnished surface, minor loss at the corner. Fanita was built in 1889 by J.B. Ayers of South Brooklyn, New York. The vessel was powered by a two cylinder steam engine which was built by Sullivan and Ehlers. The Fanita was 80 feet in length, 11 feet in breadth and drew 4 feet. The vessel was owned by John Simpson who lived at 97 Fifth Avenue, New York city. The boat was docked in Lake George. The Fanita was launched in 1890. It was the most palatial private yacht on the lake.
