Item Details
Description
An original carte de visite of the anthropologist NN Miklouho Maclay dressed in the Maclay tartan, photographed in Moscow on his return to Russia from Australia in 1886-7. He was the first European to live with the natives of New Guinea. In 1884 he married the daughter of Sir John Robertson and created the Marine Biologist’s Station at Camp Cove with the NSW State Government 1879-81, finally returning to Russia with his family in 1886 where he died aged 41 in 1888. This portrait is very similar to the portrait by Corsuchin in the SLNSW Maclay archive (without the Scottish garb – EM Webster’s biography The Moon Man indicates Maclay’s Scottish ancestry).
