139. PASSPORT INTO THE CREEK NATIONManuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, South Carolina, Chesterfield District, Dec. 3, 1804, recommending a pass be granted to Capt. John Highbanks to pass into the Creek Nation. The document states that Highbanks "...hath Signified to us his intention of Travilling [sic] to the Western country with a view of settling there..." Because white settlers were often the source of trouble on an already volatile frontier the pass goes on to reassure all that Highbanks "...was rais'd within the Compass of our Knowledge and has always conducted himself as a sober honest industrious good citizen and a friend to the common cause of this country who is worthy the attention of all Good Citizens, Wherever by may travail or Settle..." Signed by five persons attesting to his character. Formerly attached docket reads "Recommendation for a Passport thro' the creek nation..." Horizontal fold separation repaired with archival tape, some losses at bottom usual folds, otherwise good.$400-600
