He returned to Peru and unexpectedly became the most outstanding figure of young Peruvian art after obtaining the first prize for painting at the San Isidro Plastic Arts Hall. In 1986, Tola was invited to participate along with 960 artists in the second Havana biennial, the artist was awarded the first prize for painting at said biennial. José Tola, to date, has held numerous individual exhibitions in different galleries and museums in Latin America.
