A 1991 Fender Stratocaster Eric Clapton Signature Model
Serial No. 002, in black nitro cellulose finish, custom deeper contoured alder body, with chrome-plated metal parts, unfinished figured maple neck with skunk-stripe routing, twenty-two fret fingerboard with dot inlays, three Fender Lace Sensor pickups, three rotary switches, selector switch and white pickguard; and a tweed rectangular hardshell case with orange plush lining; original Fender shipping carton; a letter of authenticity on Fender letterhead from J Black at Fender Custom Shop
This guitar was custom built to the exact specifications of Eric Clapton's guitars for the Japanese guitarist Saiichi Sugiyama and delivered to him in London in early 1992.
Literature: Power of Blues - Saiichi Sugiyama Tom Watson, Strat Collectors News 2004.
Sugiyama approached John Page of Fender Customshop in 1991 and requested to have two guitars built to the exact specification of the guitars Eric Clapton was using at the time with the best materials available. John Page nominated JW Black who had been assigned to Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck's guitars at the time to build these guitars. The letter from JW Black to Sugiyama reads
These guitars were made to Eric's personal specs which include the super glue finished necks - the deeper body contours - the non-pitch neck plates - the very thin body paint finish with minimum undercoat (you will notice shrink and wood grain over time like an old vintage strat). Enjoy and thank you, J.W. Black.
This lot is accompanied by the documentation relating to the project. Sugiyama played this guitar as his main instrument during the period from 1992 to 1996 and used it to record his first album released in 1994. According to the then-Fender A&R manager in UK, Tom Nolan in 1995, Sugiyama's had been the only guitars that Fender had built to the exact specifications of Clapton's guitars at the time.
Accompanied by Fender Custom Shop certificate and a personal letter from J Black at Fender Custom Shop.
Upon bidding it will be deemed that you have read and fully understood Cooper Owen's Terms and Conditions and Summary of Charges. These can be found on ebay and Cooper Owen's website. Please note that all terms outlined on Cooper Owen's website take precedance.
