Description
Pokupaya bilet 1-y Vsesoyuznoi aviatsionnoy loterei, ukreplyayesh avaitsionno khimicheskoye stroitelstvo SSSR [By Purchasing a Ticket of the 1st All-Union Aviation Lottery You are Strengthening the Causes of Building the Soviet Aviation Industry and Chemical Warfare Preparedness], a poster by an anonymous artist. Produced by order of AVIAKhIM, [Moscow, 1926]. 69.5 x 53.5 cm.

One would like to think that the creator of this colorful photomontage poster was inspired, at least in part, by the promise of aviation as the instrument of transcontinental travel. A more prosaic interpretation stems from the fact that the top prize of the Aviation Lottery was an all-expense paid tour around the world (Moscow - Berlin - Paris - New York - Chicago - Tokyo - Vladivostok - Moscow).

The heavily promoted lottery was announced in 1926 by AVIAKhIM, the Society of Friends of Aviation and Chemical Warfare Preparedness, and took place in mid-1927. Based on the wording of the slogan, it seems likely that the poster predates the merger of AVIAKhIM and another mass organization, OSO (the Society for Strengthening the Defense of USSR) that took place in January 1927.
