PAUL ROBESON'S GRANDFATHER'S COPIES. [DELANEY, MARTIN R.] The Anglo-African Magazine. February, March, May, June, August, and September of 1859. Uniform, small 4tos; original printed wrappers; some covers detached; some chipping; two stapled at the spines. While not in the best condition, these fragile periodicals are rarely found in any condition. New York: Thomas Hamilton, 1859
Founded by Thomas Hamilton (1823-1865), pioneer black publisher in 1859, The Anglo-African only ran from January of 1859 until March of 1860. The list of contributors reads like a who's who of black scholars and writers of the day, including Frederick Douglass, Sarah Mapps Douglass, James McCune Smith, Frances E. W. Harper, James Pennington, Edward Blyden, John Mercer Langston and William C. Nell. The first chapters of Martin Delany's novel Blake, or the Huts of America, [the 3rd novel by an African-American] appeared in these pages for the first time. Issues are missing, and thus Blake is not whole, but it was never printed in its entirety in the Anglo-African - only about one third of the novel was initially printed. The whole work was printed in the Weekly African-American in 1861. Blake was not printed in book form until 1970. Accounts of John Brown's raid were printed in these issues as were the prose and poetry of Frances Ellen Watkins [later Harper], and James Pennington. Ownership signatures of Charles H. Bustill, Paul Robeson's grandfather, appear at the top of the covers of 5 of 6 issues. See Bullock The Afro-American Periodical Press, pp. 55-63. All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues and are posted below.
