China, Ming Dynasty, a cast lion/ox in two parts both sharing exactly half of the same inscription. Reputedly used by messengers who were given half the object. When they arrived at their destination, they put their animal next to that of their "host." A successful match meant success to the messenger. Death to him if the animals and their inscriptions didn't match. L: 7.5 cm.
