Description
John Wilkes Booth was an American actor who infamously assassinated President Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865, at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Born on May 10, 1838, in Bel Air, Maryland, Booth hailed from a prominent family of actors. He was known for his charismatic stage presence and was considered one of the most handsome and talented actors of his time.Booth was vehemently opposed to the abolition of slavery and sympathetic to the Confederate cause during the American Civil War. His strong Confederate sympathies fueled his hatred for President Lincoln, whom he blamed for the South's defeat. Booth meticulously planned the assassination as part of a larger conspiracy to decapitate the Union government. On the evening of April 14, 1865, while attending a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre, Booth entered Lincoln's private box and fatally shot the president in the back of the head. He then leaped onto the stage, shouting "Sic semper tyrannis!" (Thus always to tyrants), before fleeing the scene. Lincoln died the following day. After assassinating Lincoln, Booth fled to Maryland and eventually to a farm in Virginia, where he was tracked down by Union soldiers. Refusing to surrender, Booth was shot and killed on April 26, 1865, in a confrontation with Union troops. Several of Booth's co-conspirators were arrested, tried, and executed for their roles in the assassination plot.John Wilkes Booth's assassination of President Lincoln had profound and lasting consequences for American history. It led to a period of national mourning and intensified the North's resolve to ensure the preservation of the Union and to enact Reconstruction measures in the aftermath of the Civil War. Booth's name has since become synonymous with political extremism and violence in American history. This item comes with a Letter of Authenticity from a third party forensic authenticator.
