DESCRIPTION: An 18th century French verge fusee gold pocketwatch with gold, diamond and enameled chatelaine. Open face watch with porcelain dial, gold scrolled hands, Roman numerals and outer minute ring, marked "Arthur" for Jean Arthur (French, 1730-1810). Gilt full plate verge fusee movement with pierced and engraved balance bridge and marked "Arthur Paris No. 431". 18K gold case. With a tested 14K gold chatelaine of three panels connected by chains, the top panel with circular and star enameling in white, blue and cobalt centered with an approximately 20 point round diamond and the middle panel with an approximately 13 point diamond. The lower oval panel with central hairwork under convex glass surrounded by twenty-three diamonds and cobalt and white enameling engraved verso "E. Powel" and ending in twin enamel topped tassel drops, glass fob seal and small globe with hardstone cameo base. In original fitted silk lined case. Includes key. Jean Arthur received his master in 1757 and is recorded as working in Paris circa 1757 to 1789. MEASUREMENTS: Diameter of watch 1-3/4". Length of chatelaine 81/2". Width of top panel 1-7/8". CONDITION: Running. Dial with hairlines between "7" and "9" and also around screw at "3".
