Li Yin (Early Qing Dynasty): Mountainous Dwellings, Hanging scroll, ink and color on silk, the upper right inscribed and dated to 1701, signed 'Li Yin,' two seals. 71 1/2 x 38 3/4 inches (180.5 x 98.5 cm), Provenance:Mr. and Mrs. Edward W. Tom, Japan, 1940s. [Overall Creasing; cracks with associated small losses to the right; missing the right scroll end. This condition report states major condition issues only] Accompanied by three commentary letters: the first two from Thomas Lawton, the assistant curator of Chinese Art, Smithsonian Institute Freer Gallery of Art, dated January 11th and April 29th of 1968; the third from James Cahill, professor of Chinese art at the University of Berkeley, dated April 19th, 1968.For another example of Li Yin's landscape painting of similar size, please see "Travelers in Autumn Mountains," of the National Palace Museum,Taipei. The painting was Li Yin's imitation of Guo Xi, another Northern Song Dynasty master painter.
