Item Details
Description
This lithograph of the Screen in the Cathedral of St Peter, Louvain is from Sketches in Belgium and Germany with drawings by Louis Haghe. Published by Henry Graves & Co., London and printed by Day and Haghe 1840. The most famous early Victorian firm of lithographic printing was created by William Day (1797-1845) and Louis Haghe (1806-1895) in London in 1829. Throughout their initial years, Day and Haghe printed lithographs dealing with a wide range of subjects. Their lithographs were so meticulously conceived and technically advanced that in 1838, Day and Haghe were appointed 'Lithographers to the Queen.' After William's death in 1845, the firm became known as 'Day & Son' and in the mid-Victorian era it led the way as a pioneer of the recently developed medium of the lithograph printed in colours. Size: 14.5in x 23.25in (37cm x 59cm)
