Description
pair of early framed round fragments of robes; one with a five-toed dragon in gold metallic thread with waves, bats and clouds; the other embroidered florals and auspicious symbols on blue silk; both in old round gilt frames, under glass, 12” diam.
written on reverse of each: A piece from “Empress’s Gown” Loot taken by the English soldiers in the 1840’s war with China. Given to Amelia Robinson who witnessed the fighting from a chair in the rigging (crow’s nest) of the clipper ship “Frank Flint” Capt. Edwin Robinson, commanding of Thomaston, Maine.
Another note: Brought from China during the Opium Wars (1839-42) by Great-Great Grandmother Amelia Robinson.
along with from the same home, a gouache on pith paper of a mandarin, 15” by 11” (water stains); a framed embroidered textile, 8” by 25”; a small pair of embroidered panels, 8”diam.; (2) embroidered panels with storks in a landscape, 18” by 5”; and a painted pierced fan from Bali
