A BRUSSELS HISTORICAL TAPESTRY FRAGMENT

MID-17TH CENTURY

Details

Depicting a warrior astride his horse in the heat of battle, possibly a scene from the Battle of Milvian Bridge
Approximately 9 ft. 1 in. (2 m. 77 cm.) x 7 ft. 7 in. (2 m. 31 cm.)

Lot Essay

Although fragmentary, this scene possibly depicts the Battle of Milvian Bridge, where Constantine the Great (280-337 A.D.) defeated the Emperor Maxentius in 312 A.D. Eusebius records in his Life of Constantine that on the eve of the battle in a dream, Constantine saw a cross in the sky and heard a voice crying 'in hoc signio vinces' (in this sign, conquer). The Emperor granted an edict of toleration to the Christians and was later baptized. He adopted the Chi-Rho monogram on his coins and substituted it for the Roman Eagle on the standards of his legions.
