Item Details
Description
Polychromed Cast Iron "Cornstalk" Fence Post, c. 1982, Nadler Foundry, Plaquemine, the husked corn ear finial sits above a quatrefoil faux bois standard with climbing vine, all atop a pumpkin, on a chamfered square base with flange, H.- 76 in., W.- 11 1/4 in., D.- 11 1/2 in. Provenance: The Estate of Jay Calamia, property from the Dufour-Plassan House, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Condition
Heavy, structurally sound and in overall very good condition with no visible losses or repairs. There are several layers of paint that are generally intact with a few flake losses and soiling. The mounting base and area below the pumpkin exhibit some oxidation, rust, and soiling- as is to be expected with materials and outdoor use. Stalk is from the newer side portion of the original cornstalk fence at the Dufour-Plassan house. In the early 1980s, co-owner Kel Boudreaux commissioned the Nadler Foundry in Plaquemine, Louisiana, to re-cast the original posts and fence for the side that had been removed earlier in the century for a hedge. The post is in two pieces with a removable husk finial that weighs ~ 50 lbs. The post weighs ~ 200 lbs.
