Oriented by his family towards an ecclesiastical career, he was appointed Bishop of Autun. He held positions of power during the Ancien RŽgime, the Revolution, the Directory, the Consulate, the First Empire, as President of the Council of Ministers under the Restoration and as ambassador under the July Monarchy.
