After serving in the French army, he reorganised the Egyptian army. British Commander-in-Chief at the end of the Boer War, he reorganised the Indian Army and became Resident-General in Egypt. In 1914, he was Minister of War.Autograph letter signed Kenigston Museum, 12.06.1878 to Hepworth Dixon:"...that the officer in charge of the work should attend oftener at Comitee meetings paricularly when anyhing has to be discussed that regards his work, by thus means he would be much more able to act up to the spirit of their wishes than by mererly receiving witten directionsÉÓ.
