Lot Essay

Mathieu Bauve, maître in 1754.
This elegantly proportioned canapé by Mathieu Bauve (d.1786) displays the maker's hallmark rocaille fashioning characteristic of the mid-eighteenth French style. An innovator in furniture design, Bauve was at the height of his craft and should be considered amongst the most celebrated furniture markers of his age: Delanois, Heurtaut and Jacob. After an apprenticeship with Nicolas-Quinibert Foliot, he received his maître on the same day as Jean-Baptiste Boulard, RVLC and Fromageau.
