Lot Essay
This motif of simulated moss agate appears to have been particularly popular for French gold boxes in this period and can be found on several made by Charles Le Bastier and Charles Alexandre Bouillerot. Christie's sold in New York on 24 October 2017, lot 16, an oval box dated 1778-1779 by Bouillerot enamelled with similar motif on opalescent pink ground and one on apricot ground by Le Bastier dated 1777-1778 was sold on 12 November 2020, lot 84.
Pierre-Robert Dezarot entered his mark in January 1775 sponsored by François-Simon Charbonné with whom he had been apprenticed since 31 May 1754. On 4 September 1775 the Affiches de Paris mentionned the loss of 'un étui d'or gravé, deux louis de récompense chez Dezarot le Jeune, place Dauphine'. Dezarot is last recorded in 1781 as living in the rue des Mauvaises Paroles.
