Ovale en jaspe rouge appliquée sur les côtés de draperies centrées d’un trophée militaire, sur le bord du couvercle des entrelacs de feuilles de laurier avec appuie-pouce en ruban noué centré d’un diamant, le couvercle décoré de festons fleuris et centré d’un médaillon en lapis lazuli appliqué d’un cupidon et son chien dans un paysage boisé, poinçons de contrôle français postérieurs

A GERMAN GOLD-MOUNTED HARDSTONE SNUFF-BOX, UNMARKED, POSSIBLY AUGSBOURG, CIRCA 1760
Oblong, the jasper body and cover applied with gold cage-work of draping centred by a musical trophy on the lower part, the cover mounts of entwined laurel garlands with jewelled ribbon tied push button, the cover centred by an openwork gold scene of cupid sitting in a wooded landscape on lapis lazuli ground, framed by flower garlands and scrolling motifs at each end, marked with later French control marks
The style of this snuff-box is reminiscent of the 'Prunkuhr', the architectural clocks made at the end of the 17th century in Augsburg. These clocks often featured allegories of the Liberal Arts mixed with mythological scenes. The lapis lazuli plaque can be compared to the one on the clock by Johann Valentin Gevers dated 1709-1712 in the Rothschild Collection, Exceptional, Paris, 21 November 2023, lot 13.


Lot Essay

Le décor de cette tabatière n’est pas sans rappelé les décors de ‘Prunkuhr’, pendules architecturales fabriquées à la fin du XVIIe siècle à Augsbourg. Ces pendules figuraient souvent des allégories des Arts Libéraux mêlées à des scènes mythologiques. Ainsi la plaque en lapis peut-elle être rapprochée de celle qui figurait sur la pendule par Johann Valentin Gevers datée 1709-1712 dans la Collection Rothschild, Exceptional, Paris, 21 novembre 2023, lot 13.
