Charles Henry Gifford (Massachusetts, 1839-1904), Sailboat at Sea, oil on canvas, depicts two sailors in a small craft on choppy waters, signed LL "Charles H. Gifford 99", appears to be original gilt composition frame, born in Fairhaven, MA, July 13th, 1839, enlisted in Co. 1 3rd Regiment of MVM which recruited in Fairhaven and then served for nine months in NC, Gifford was captured by the Union army during their raid on Plymouth, Dec. 1863 and spent one month in a Petersburg prison, once out of service, Gifford went on to garner a high reputation as a self taught artist specializing in marine views; SS 8.75"h x 13.75"w, DOA 17.25"h x 22.25"wEst.2000-4000
