Gino D'Achille was born in Rome in 1935 and displayed artistic talen at an early age. He studied at the art school The Liceo Artistico in Rome from the age of 13. At the age of 19 he enrolled in the University of Architecture in Rome while working at the same time in an advertising company producing film posters and illustrations. He then moved to Milan where he became a fulltime commercial artist. In 1964 he moved to London having been headhunted to illustrate David Kossof's Bible Stories, an extremely popular book which established his credentials as a top illustrator in England. He has also worked for animation companies in London, Germany and France. He first came to the attention of American collectors with his paintings for the John Carter of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Ballantine Books in 1973. Gino has created over 100 cover paitings for science-fiction titles published by Daw Books, Ace, Ballantine and various other publishers. He is also well known for his series of Flashman cover paintings and for his paintings for western adventure stories and war stories, as well as romance novels and children's books. In this catalog, Russ Cochran is proud to introduce these original paintings and drawings by Gino D'Achille to American and European collectors. This represents the first public offering of his artwork, and future catalogs will contain more of his work. Since Gino has kept his originals, very few pieces have ever reached the collector market, and it is anticipated that prices for his originals will increase substantially in the near future.
