Item Details
Description
Rome, ca. 1st Century BCE. Matched pair of bronze chariot fittings depicting the demigod and mythical hero Hercules (Herakles). Herakles is depicted wearing the head and skin of the Nemean Lion, with the paws of the lion draped over his shoulders and tied in a knot at the center of his chest. The head of the lion rests atop his divine head, with his classical curls tumbling out below the lion's teeth and mixing in with his beard which looks as if it were inspired by the wind and waves. Herakles looks off into the distance with wide eyes and deep pupiles, a place along with the upper lip where jewels, silver or gold would have been set. The bronze has formed a wonderful marbling patina, with hints of green, blue, and red. An iron nail still remains where these pieces would have been attached to a chariot. On custom stand they measure 6-1/2"H x 5"L x 4-1/4"W.

Provenance: Ex-Prominent New York City, NY Gallery.
