Whenever a team goes to a Bowl game, the Bowl Committee gives the players, coaches and staff members many gifts. They ususally give them several small gifts like hats, windbreakers and jackets. The Bowl Committee also gives a very nice gift such as a watch or ring. This hat is an ORANGE BOWL HAT that was given to TOM OSBORNE, the HEAD COACH OF THE NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS when the HUSKERS participated in the 1994 ORANGE BOWL, which was played following the 1993 season. This game featured #1 Nebraska against #2 Florida State and Florida State was heavily favored by 17 points. But, this was a hard fought game and the final score was 18 to 16 - with Nebraska missing a late field goal. Thus, Florida State won this game and the win resulted in Florida State's first National Title. It was a heartbreaking loss for Coach Osborne and the Huskers and that makes this hat even more special - because most Coaches would be crushed after such a heartbreaking loss. But, more determined than ever, Tom Osborne's and the Cornhuskers came back to win the National Titles in 1994 and 1995. The Huskers were one game away from playing for another National Title in 1996 and then the Huskers won another National Title in 1997. Thus, from 1993 to 1997 - Nebraska played in FOUR NATIONAL TITLE GAMES and they won THREE OF THOSE TITLES - and the year they did not play for the Title - they beat an exceptional and talented Virginia Tech team in the Orange Bowl and the Huskers won that game. The Huskers were the dominate team of the latter part of the 1990's from 1992 - 1997. Then after the 1997 season - Tom Osborne, the legendary Nebraska Coach who won 255 games in 25 seasons retired and entered politics in Nebraska. That is an average of ten wins per year and nobody has a record like that in this history of college football? Tom Osborne was immediately elected to the College Football Hall of Fame as one of the greatest Coaches in the history of College Football. He does not have the most wins, but in a 25 year span - nobody has been better! This was Tom Osborne's Gift from that National Championship game in the 1994 Orange Bowl. It is a Orange colored -Orange Bowl cap with the older style FEDERAL EXPRESS ORANGE BOWL LOGO. It is an adjustable cap. The initials of T.O. are inside the cap. Those initials were placed by Glen Abbott, the longtime head equipment manager for the University of Nebraska. Glen Abbott took care of Tom Osborne's clothing and this cap was left behind in Tom's Osborne's locker after the Orange Bowl. Tom Osborne wore this cap while at the 1994 Orange Bowl. He did not wear this cap during the game as the Coaches wore matching Bowl outfits, but he did wear this cap during some of the practices while at the 1994 Orange Bowl and during the festivities of the Orange Bowl. This item comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Glen Abbott as to the authenticity of this hat.
Condition reportThis hat was not worn excessively - but does show some wear. Great piece of memorabilia from a legendary Football Coach.
