S-15 The following item is from the estate of Navy Petty Officer A.W. Burris who served in the South Pacific on the USS Massachusetts in 1944.
U.S. Marine carved coconut of an uncomplimentary caricature of a Japanese soldier. The seated figure is wearing glasses, a helmet, has buck teeth, and has a painted Japanese flag. Decorated coconuts were used by the Marines on Okinawa for target practice. With a sailor's original letter to his mother describing the coconut and it's usage. II+
