Lot 50: Jefferson Davis Signed Check 1871

Jefferson Davis and Life After The War
JEFFERSON DAVIS, President of the Confederate States.
Check Signed, "Jefferson Davis" on a Savings Bank of Memphis Check, March 28, 1871, 2.75" x 7.5," Fine. Payable to Laura Reed in the amount of Fifty Dollars. Cut-cancelled and torn in several places, all of which was crudely repaired years ago with tape that has left a brown stain on the back only. Miraculously, Davis' signature is unaffected by the tear and measures over 3" in length. A Revenue stamp is affixed to the check on the left side over a cotton bale vignette. Several endorsements appear on the back, including one to an Orphan's home.
