Frank Duveneck (Cincinnati, Ohio, 1848-1919) 22" x 18" oil on canvas of lady. Attribution unsigned. Frank Duveneck, one of the best known of Cincinnati painters, was born in Covington, Kentucky. He studied at the Munich Royal Academy from 1870-1873. In 1874, he returned to Cincinnati, where he painted portraits and taught art classes. He then traveled between Munich, Venice, & Florence until 1888, where he experimented with a new style of realism featuring dashing brushwork. He quickly became a leader among the large number of students in Munich and worked with such artists as William Merrit Chase and John Twachtman. Typical paintings by Duveneck of this period show a strong modeled head of figure emerging from a dark often not fully painted background, with a few light or bright highlights. In 1888, he returned to Cincinnati where from 1900 he taught at the Cincinnati Art Academy. Fine condition.
