Serge Poliakoff (1900-1969) was born in Moscow in 1900 and emigrated to Paris in 1923. For the next twenty years he earned his living as a cabaret guitarist. He began painting at the age of twenty-four and held his first exhibition, at the Galerie Drouant in 1931.
From 1935 to 1937 Poliakoff studied at the Slade School of Art in London (he also had bit parts as a musician in a few films while there). On his return to Paris he met Kandinsky, whose influence turned Poliakoff to abstract painting. Others who had profound influences on him were Robert and Sonia Delaunay. From 1951 on he exhibited internationally, in London, New York, Tokyo, Belgium, Italy and Scandinavia.
His prints were a major part of his oeuvre.
