Jacob Steinhardt Original Signed No. 10 Woodcuts

Elegies of War, 1969, 10 woodcuts, 19.7x15" (50x38cm) each, edition 65, hand signed in English and numebred in pencil.
Prints are in excellent condition and are unframed. Prints are placed in a canvas portfolio that is in good condition, size: 24.4x19" (62x48cm). Each print has a white matt around.

Jacob Steinhardt (1887-1968) was born in 1887 in Zerkow, Germany. He studied at the School of Art in Berlin in 1906, and a year later he studied painting with Louis Corinth and engraving with Herman Struck. He continued his studies in Paris in 1908-10 together with Matisse and Steinlen. In 1914 he exhibited with Meidner at the first Expressionist Exhibition in Berlin. Steinhardt immigrated to Israel in 1933 and became a teacher and director of the Bezalel School of Art. He is mostly known for his narrative woodcuts depicting biblical and other Jewish subjects. He won several international prizes for his woodcuts, and had many exhibition across the world. Steinhardt died in 1968.

Elegies of War is a fine collector's item. It includes 10 beautiful woodcuts that deal with famous biblical themes. This is the last work by Steinhardt who died just before printing the works by his own hands. They are printed in 65 copies, numbered from 1-65 and stamped with "Estate of Jacob Steinhardt". The prints - The Earth Mornes and Withers (Isaiah 24,4), The Ravenous Bird (Isaiah 35,9), The Birds of Prey around Her (Jeremiah 12,9), Memorial Stones into a Heap of Stones (after Isaiah 17, 1), Flame of Devouring Fire (Isaiah 9, 4), Every House Bewails the Burning, The Tree Burnt, the Tree was Consumed, Day of Great Slaughter, When Towers Fall (Isaiah 30,25), A Dread Great Darkness and Weapons of War Laid Waste. The portfolio is accompanied by a brief introduction.
