Shmuel (Alexander) Katz was born in 1926 in Vienna. He immigrated to Israel in 1946. He studiesd architecture in the Technion of Budapest in 1945 and later at the Art Academy of Paris in 1953-54. He won several prizes: 1959 Art Book Exhibition, Leipzig; 1962 Grant from French Government; 1965 Salon for Humour, Italy; 1966 Oscar for Humour, Brussels; 1970 Humour in Art, Expo, Montreal; 1974 Nordau Prize; 1985 Nahum Gutman Prize; 1988 Anderson Prize, Basle; 1989 The Hungarian Prime Minister Prize, Humor International Festival, Budapest; 1997 Intarnational prize for caricatures, Budapest.
