John Wilson Carmichael (1800-1868), 'A Dutch fishing boat and other vessels in a swell, a view of Bamborough Castle beyond', oil on canvas, signed and dated 1884, 17" x 25" For compositional purposes, Carmichael has depicted a somewhat stylised view of Bamborough, the ancient fortress on the Northumberland coast. This is an area that Carmichael would have known well. He was born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and shared a studio with landscape painter Thomas Miles Richardson in the city. He was a regular exhibitor of marine works at the Royal Academy between 1835 and 1859. Carmichael was sent officially to record events in the Baltic theatre of the Crimean War in 1854 and 1855 and his accounts of events were published as engravings in the Illustrated London News.
