A George III mahogany eight day longcase clock with 'High Water at Bristol Key', circa 1775, The four pillar rack and bell striking movement with 12 inch brass break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds dial and arched calendar aperture within an applied Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes and signed 'Jos. Wood, Bristol' to lower edge, with scroll cast spandrel applied angles and rolling moon calibrated for 'High Water at Bristol Key' to arch, the case with swan neck pediment and break-arch dentil cornice above fluted corinthian pilasters to hood and shaped top door flanked by fluted canted angles to trunk, on conforming plinth base with shaped raised panel to front, 234cm high. NB: Joseph Wood is recorded in Moore A J 'The Clockmakers of Bristol 1650-1900' as working from St. Augustines back in 1775, then from St. Stephens Parish in 1784, he died on April 2nd 1791.
