Charles Turzak (Chicago, 1899-1985).  A series of 12 original, single impression woodcuts depicting the Life of Benjamin Franklin.  Largest 4.5 x 6.5 in. (sight).
Turzak, born in Illinois in 1899 to Czechoslovakian immigrant parents, first became recognized with his work in Chicago as part of the WPA administration.  Woodcuts were his preferred medium, and his series, History of Illinois of 1934 gave him national attention.  Subsequently he produced a number of series, including the example offered here.  Each example is a proof, and is a single edition, not having been produced as a limited edition.Â
Each work is labeled on verso with a different subject of Benjamin Franklin's life.
