Quoted from the first page, “At his death on December 10, 1896, Alfred Bernhard Nobel, the Swedish scientist who invented dynamite, endowed a fund from which the income was to be awarded annually to several recipients who ‘conferred the greatest benefit on mankind.’” The Nobel Lecture was delivered by Jimmy Carter on December 10, 2002, at the ceremony in Oslo, Norway, where he received the Nobel Prize for Peace.
