Printed to Celebrate the Opening of the Erie Canal

c. 1825 “Alliance of Neptune and Pan” Silk Ribbon, Choice Extremely Fine.
7.5” x 2”, printed in black ink on fine, cream-colored silk. Printed to celebrate the opening of the Erie canal, which united Lake Erie with the Atlantic Ocean. The round central vignette shows King Neptune in a seashell arm-in-arm with Pan in a boat paddled by an American Indian. Rare - the first we’ve ever seen!
