"DISPOSITION WILD AS THE WILDERNESS"51. [THE NATIVE AMERICAN CHARACTER] Exceptional treatise analyzing the American Indian from a mid-19th century perspective. Manuscript, 12pp, 7½"x12¼", n.p., Nov 24, 1840. In small part, "The attempt to arrive at the East Indies by sailing west which caused the discovery of the Continent and Island of America by that enterprising adventurer Christopher Columbus in 1492 ushered also into existence a race of beings entirely different form our own. In stature tall and straight of a complexion resembling copper, high cheek bones, wide mouth, coarse black hair...capable of every expression of cunning and resolution -- With a disposition wild as the wilderness which he inhabits, he roams form place to place wherever pleasure or interest lures him possessing an astonishing equanimity of mind with the command of every passion but revenge, faithful in his friendship, hospitable and generous so long a he is treated with justice and humanity..." There is considerable discussion detailing the origin and specific examples of their noble character. In concluding remarks, the author laments the Indian's gradual disappearance, "...We have in our day already witnessed their removal west of the Mississippi, to make way for the onward march of civilization...they will be driven back until they can retreat no further -- their fires all nearly extinguished -- a little longer and the white men will cease to persecute them -- They will cease to exist -- and when future generations ask the questions, where are the people of which we hear so much, Echo will answer, where!" Bound with string. Light general toning, darker at edges; occasional tiny edge nicks; o/w in very good condition. MB: $300ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
