EDWARD WESTON 1886-1958 Portrait of a Woman, 1916 Gelatin silver print. 16 ½ x 11 ⅝ in. (41.8 x 29.5 cm). Signed in ink on the recto. The sitter of this photographs is Ruth St. Denis, the famous dancer. PROPERTY OF A PRIVATE EUROPEAN COLLECTION Provenance Sotheby's, New York, October 17, 2003, lot 178; To the present Private Collection Two other prints of this very early Weston image have been sold since 1988. The identity of the sitter is unknown. However, the large size of this print and the fact that multiple prints exist, indicate the sitter may have been a wellknown dancer or actress of the day.
